Wheatsville Food Co-Op
A Community-Powered Grocery Nourishing Austin Since 1976. It sells a full line of groceries, including organic produce, fresh meats, deli products, dairy products, pet foods and household goods, with an emphasis on local goods and vegetarian/vegan options. Wheatsville Food Co-op is the only independent retail food cooperative in Texas. Back in the ’70s, processed foods were dominating the marketplace, and fresh, natural options had become very difficult to find. In protest, a group of like-minded Austinites joined forces and opened Wheatsville in an attempt to make healthy, unprocessed foods available to the community. Named after Wheatville, the first Black freedom colony in Austin post-Civil War, the grocery store and community hub is on a mission to empower and, although not Black-owned, is passionate about preserving Austin’s Black history. It is true that Wheatsville is one of the few icons of old Austin that still remains. The core culture of Keep Austin Weird, live music and laid-back people are what made Bickford, and so many of us, fall in love with this city.
