Lauren Hua is an contemporary abstract painter who uses art as a way to blend her American upbringing with her Asian heritage. Carrying her heritage to the canvas as the subject, her pieces are free flowing, with both Japanese and Chinese influences in the brush strokes, motifs and compositions, yet breaks from tradition with bold textures and splashes of metallics which speaks to the more Western, independent, contemporary style.Her work expresses her pursuit of art and beauty, despite being taught these things were of little value, while still honoring her upbringing. These concepts have shaped her approach to art and been growing and evolving since she first started painting in 2020 when she left her established career and began to discover who she was as a person as well as an artist.

Artist Statement

Her works are stories about breaking from the exacting regime of your past, a celebration of personal evolution, emphasizing the freedom to exist without the pressure of perfection or rigid expectations. In her pieces, the past is acknowledged and honored—offering the foundational framework for identity—but it is never the defining force. Rather than allowing it to dictate the artist’s present or future, she invites viewers to embrace a more open, expansive sense of self, where growth and transformation can unfold without fear of judgment or restriction.Above all, she is an an avid believer that beauty should be experienced at every possible moment, whether that is found in the perfect latte, a breathtaking view, or a stolen kiss. She strives to create art that communicates that belief, one that does not shock and awe, but gives the viewer a muted joy, peace and contentment that can be experienced everyday.
